![]() 2 HAIKU | ![]() Still I Love America 11|04|04 Lies straight into the face, vote spoiling in battleground states, the knowledge that our village is ripped down the middle and still I Love America.
That's the price of creating words and sounds. They come back to you. We released that single in October. I didn't know until I had to sing the line last night but it still feels true.
Election night here in Portland Oregon Rock the Vote, IndyVoter.org and The Portland Bus Project had an election party; food, big screen results, 2 Dj's. It was an experiment in group anxiety after 9pm PST.
Ohio, PA and Florida had yet to be called. Local ballot results began to come in. The "moral" vote trend had become apparent. Even here? The only thing keeping Oregon from going farther left is the ocean. Yet it was true even here the pre occupation with sex lives ruled the polls.
Florida was called and Ohio in the midst of huge voter purging was heading towards the incumbent. Even as the vice presidential candidate of the Democrats said they would fight for every vote it didn't feel strong. It was over, just as I was to take the stage for a brief results update and speech on "what now" I searched for my root feeling; embarrassment. It was a bit startling; my mind knew the sleazy nature of this whole election, on all sides, yet anger wasn't even in the top three feelings.
She is an idea. I don't need to parrot all the supposed virtues. It only attracts the echoes about how those ideals and freedoms are being infringed, infected and stolen. Still I love her, been lucky to travel from her and always return home. These volcanic mountains of the Cascades, the meeting of the Columbia and Willamette rivers will offer comfort and inspiration long after we are dust. Before that we must stand up, breath deep and act out of love.
